The research examined both the ecological values of wetlands and the economic impacts of wetland loss in the Black River subwatershed of Lake Simcoe. The science is clear. During extreme flood events – like we saw on the Canadian prairies and other locations this spring – our first reaction is usually to improve infrastructure and disaster response plans to prepare for the next flood. However, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that links wetland drainage to increased flood damage. The message is clear: wetland drainage must stop if we ever hope to effectively manage flood risks and save our lakes.
